Let's Put On A Finger Puppets Show
Making little finger puppets is one of the best projects for children. You get the whole crafting and working with your fingers. But then you get the whole aspect of making up a fun play at the end. It is creativity all around and that is a great thing, with all of life's modern distractions.
Once you have the basic idea of how to make finger puppets. The characters you can make are endless. Animals, doctors, robots, aliens and monsters are good ideas, you can make anything you like.
What do we need to make fun little finger puppets for children?
- Craft felt in different colours
- Embroidery thread
- Fabric glue
- Scissors
- Needle
Start Creating The Finger Puppet Template
Step One
The first stage is to measure the size for your finger. This is not too difficult, we can basically guess.
Lay down some felt and pop your finger on it. Now get someone else to slowly draw a shape around your finger, like the picture above.
The shape needs to be at least twice the width of you finger. But if in doubt, make is slightly bigger than smaller.
But don't worry too much about this. Once we try our finger puppet, if it feels too loose, we can just make our next finger puppet a bit smaller. And if it feels too tight, we can make the next one a bit bigger.
We don't really want our finger puppets too tight.
Starting Making Our Finger Puppet
Step Two
Now cut out the felt shape we drew and use it to draw around on a similar piece of felt. We basically need two of these finger puppet shapes.
So now we have two shapes, choose which one you want to be the front of the puppet.
Cut two circles from white felt and use the fabric glue to stick these to the front of your puppet face. You can use the thread to stitch these on too, if you like that look.
Use other coloured felt or felt pens to add more details. Add black pupils, a nose and a mouth. These are your funny little finger puppets, make them the way you want to.
Decorating Our Finger Puppet
Step Three
Now you can keep decorating your finger puppets how you like. Do they have a cape or antennas like an alien or pipe cleaner arms?
Use up your spare pieces of felt to make fun details on your character.
Once you have finished decorating, use the embroidery thread to sew around the outside, joining the front and back together. Ask an adult for help and guidance with the sewing.
And there you have it. The first one will be a little bit fiddly. But then once you know how, you can create a whole collection of funny character finger puppets. And put on a silly play for your friends and family.
