Crafting for Kids Is Really All About Stimulating Their Imagination
Making puppets just makes me chuckle when I think about it. So many funny moments have happened from making and playing with simple little puppets.
If you want to have a really good laugh with your family or friends, make some puppets. Then put on a silly play.
Wooden spoons make perfect puppets as they already look like funny little people.
What do we need to make our wooden spoon puppet?
- Wooden spoon
- Acrylic paints
- Fabric
- Thread
- Ribbon
- Glue
- Yarn or wool
- Paintbrushes, scissors and needle
How To Make A Wooden Spoon Puppet
Step One
Make sure your work place is protected. Lay down some old newspaper to protect the surface if you drop some paint.
Now paint the spoon white and let the paint dry. The reason we paint the spoon white first, is because this makes the colours brighter that we paint on top of the white.
But this is not super important.

Step Two
Once the white paint is dry, you can paint the spoon head whatever colour you like. It is your funny little wooden spoon puppet, you make it the way you like.
Once the main colour paint is dry. You can use a smaller brush and paint a funny face on it.
TIP... if you want to make your character really clever, paint a happy face on one side of the spoon. Then on the other side, paint an angry face.
Then you can just spin the character around when they are happy or angry.
Make An Outfit For A Wooden Spoon Puppet
Step Three
Now we can dress our wooden spoon puppet. To make an outfit, cut a rectangle of fabric. Then stitch the shorter sides together to make a fabric tube. Ask an adult to help if this is fiddly.
Now make a running stitch along the top. This basically means that we just sew the thread in and out along the top. So we can pull the thread and the fabric will all wrinkle up. This will be the top of our outfit.
Glue The Wooden Puppet Clothing
Step Four
Put the outfit onto our wooden spoon puppet and then pull the running stitch thread. The fabric will wrinkle up around the neck.
You can use some white glue to stick the outfit on place.
Wrap some ribbon around the fabric and the neck to finish it off.
Finally, We Finish Making Our Homemade Wooden Puppet
Step Five
Now for the hair. We can take some yarn or wool. Wrap the wool around your fingers to make a little looping bundle. Then carefully take it off fingers and tie is in the middle.
Now we are going to glue it on to the top of the spoon.
Once the glue is dry, we can give our wooden spoon puppet a hair cut. Cut the loops at the end and trim the hair into a nice shape.
Finish your wooden spoon puppet the way you like.
And that's it! Now I am starting to chuckle again thinking about the funny stories your puppet can tell and all the mischief they can get up to.
