Each Tie-Dye T-Shirt Is Unique
Making a tie-dye is a really interesting and fun little project. Revamp old t-shirts and try experiments and have fun dying all sort of the fabrics for making other things, like scatter cushions or bags or aprons or just art.
Tie-dyeing can be quite messy so ask permission and get some some supervision from an adult.
What Do We Need to Do Tie-Dyeing
- Light coloured, long sleeve t-shirt
- Dye
- Scissors
- Bucket
- Jug
- Wooden Spoon
Get The Material Ready
Tie the string around the sleeve of the t-shirt in two places. If you don't have along sleeved t-shirt, you can just tie string around the body of the t-shirt.
We need to tie the string really tight. The idea is that no dye will be able to get into the spots where there string is tied tightly. So if your string is not tied tightly your tie-dye lines won't be as pronounced.
Tie string around the body of the t-shirt about at 10cm intervals. This design is really up to you. If you want more lines, tie more string.
Tie-Dye Your T-shirt
When you have done all the tying, make up some dye in an old bucket. Follow the instruction for the fabric dye you have. Use an old wooden spoon or similar to push the t-shirt into the bucket of dye. Stir the t-shirt around gently.
Make sure all of the t-shirt has been covered in the dye. Leave the t-shirt to soak in the dye for approximately 1 hour, stirring occasionally.
Messy Part Of Tie-Dyeing
Here comes the really messy part. When you feel like the dye process is finished. Carefully use the old wooden spoon to pull out your tie-dye t-shirt from the bucket of dye. Use rubber gloves and carefully wring out the excess dye or let drip dry.
Now leave the strings still attached and wash the t-shirt according to the dye instructions again.
Finishing The Tie-Dye T-shirt For Kids
Allow the t-shirt to dry completely. Now use a pair of sharp scissors and carefully cut the strings on the t-shirt. Iron the t-shirt to remove the wrinkles from the string.
And there you have it, congratulations!
You very own, one of a kind, tie-dye t-shirt. Absolutely unique to you. Aren't you clever.
