Let's Make A Dress For A Teddy Bear
In a previous project we made a fantastic and fun, easy teddy bear. Now we can make our teddy bear a nice dress. This project is simple and fun to make. And once you get the idea, it is simple to change the fabric design and make a whole wardrobe of outfits.
Have fun and share this post with a friend who likes playing with teddies too.
What we need to make a dress for a teddy bear
- 22 x 36cms or 9 x 14 inches of cotton fabric
- Scissors
- Needle and matching thread
- Safety pins
- 20cm or 8 inches of elastic
- 25 cm or 10 inches of ribbon
How To Make A Dress For A Teddy Bear
Step One
First to start to make a dress for a teddy bear we need to fold the fabric in half. Fold the fabric so the short ends are touching. Next we can cut along the fold. Now we should have two pieces of fabric that are 22 x 18xm or 9 x 7 inches.
Now place these two pieces of fabric on top of each other with the good sides facing each other on the inside. Next sew along the two longer sides but not all the way. On each side stop about 10cms or 4 inches from the top. This will leave spaces for the arms to go through.
If you made your teddy bear a slightly different size, just make adjustments to the fabric so it fits better. You can trim a piece of fabric off before sewing or just leave it and see how it turns out.
Let's Make Our Teddy Bear Dress A Bit Neater
Step Two
Now we have a tube of fabric with the good sides on the inside. Now we are going to sew some seams along the bottom and top edges of the tube.
On the bottom edge fold the fabric over about 1cm or half an inch. Then sew a running stitch all around the seam to secure it.
Now go to the top. Where we stopped sewing, we can fold these edges of fabric over and sew another seam to neaten the arm holes up.
Remember, your sewing doesn't have to be super neat. I find sewing is a nice way to relax. Maybe sit on the sofa in front of the tv and take your time doing your sewing.
Finish Sewing The Top Of The Teddy Bear Dress
Step Three
Now we are going to work where the neck will be. So at the top, this time fold over 2cms or three quarters of an inch and sew a running stitch to hold the seam down. We are basically making a little tunnel all the way around. We are going to thread our elastic through this tunnel so our neckline gets bunched up.
So make sure your sew the seam wide enough to fit your elastic through.
Once you have finished sewing, attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and carefully thread it through the little tunnel you just made. Then gently pull the elastic so the fabric bunches up. Then trim the ends of the elastic and sew them together.

Make A Dress For A Teddy Bear And Add The Final Bow
Step Four
Finally turn the dress the right way round and put the dress on your teddy bear. Tie your ribbon into a bow and cut off any excess ribbon at an angle to prevent fraying. Then carefully sew on your bow onto the front of the dress.
And there we are finished. Now we know how to make a dress for a teddy bear. Just change the fabric and make more dresses. Have a little party and play dress up with your teddy.
