Make Simple Homemade Egg Cosy
A homemade egg cosy is a fun, simple gift that is a bit different. But they don't have to be gift. Maybe just make them to keep your own boiled eggs warm a little longer. Making egg cosies is a fun project that will brighten up anyone's morning.
Here we are going to make egg cosies with a decorative flower motif.
What We Need To Make A Homemade Egg Cosy
- Paper
- Scissors
- Pins
- 1 sheet of felt
- 1 sheet of felt for the flower
- Needle and thread
- Felt glue
- Embroidery thread
- Scissors
- Small pompom
Cut Out The Egg Cosy Templates
Step One
We need to make some templates. These are not too hard to actually just draw by hand. The egg cosy template wants to be approximately 10cm x 10cm with the arch. You can make the flower petals as large or small as you like.
Either copy the template above, rescale and print. Or simply freehand the design onto some paper. Don't worry too much if it is a bit wobbly.
Cut out the paper templates. Then draw around the egg cosy part twice onto felt. We need two of those. Then draw around the petals onto felt. We need six petals. Cut out all the parts.
Arrange the petals in a circle and start sewing along the bottom straight edges with a small running stitch in and out. When you come to the end, gently pull the thread so the petals bunch up and make a flower.
Sew Together The Homemade Egg Cosy Template Shapes
Step Two
Now we can sew together the shapes we are going to use for the main part of the homemade egg cosy. Sew around the edge using a blanket stitch. Leave the bottom part open, obviously for your egg.
A blanket stitch means you go in the front and out the back. Then up and over and back in the front. But before you go back in the front, one stitch along, you hook the thread. This makes a nice square shaped stitch.
Glue On The Felt Flower We Made
Step Three
Now we can use some felt glue to glue down the felt flower we made earlier. Make sure to only apply glue to the centre of the flower. This will leave the petals to stand proud when we pop our homemade egg cosy on an actual egg.
Let the glue dry.
Finishing Making Our Homemade Egg Cosy
Step Four
Finally, apply more glue to the centre of the flower and push on a pompom. The pompom is the centre of our flower design and will cover our sewing to look neater.
Now let all the glue dry completely.
Wow, we have finally finished our homemade egg cosy. What a fun project. I love boiled eggs in the morning and now they can all stay cosy until I am ready to eat them.
