Lavender Pockets Are a Timeless Classic
I remember when I was a very small child, my grandmother sitting me down and making lavender pockets with me. Then we would put them in our sock drawers. Then the sweet smell would mysteriously linger for what felt like months afterwards. Such wonderful memories.
But this does not mean these fun little things are dated. Today, even I find tiny children as much as older ones still love the smell of lavender as much as grown up do to.
We have modernised the look here. But this is surely a super fun gift for children to make and well, an appreciated gift by anyone who receives one.
What We Need To Make Lavender Pockets
- Plain paper
- Scissors
- Pins
- Coloured felt pieces
- Pinking shears
- Needle and embroidery thread
- Loose dried lavender
- Buttons
- Ribbons
Lavender Pocket Templates
Decide on a shape for your lavender pocket. Here we have decided on a heart shape, but obviously it could be any design that has a little space for filling with lavender.
Draw a heart shape on a piece of paper and cut it out. Pin the paper template on top of two layers of felt.
Cutting the Lavender Pocket Shapes
We can now use our pinking shears to carefully cut through the two layers of felt and around the template. You don't absolutely need to use pinking shears, this is more for decorative effect. Felt is not a fabric that frays.
If you are making more than one lavender pocket, you can keep the template and reuse it.
Sewing the Lavender Pocket
Now we can remove the template and think about sewing the two felt shapes together. Use a short piece of embroidery thread and thread a needle. Take your time to start sewing.
Sew a simple stitch around the edge of the felt shapes. Again, take your time and make it look nice and neat. But don't worry too much if you don't have steady hands. One of the beautiful things about receiving a hand made gift, is being able to see it is actually hand made and not mass produced on a machine.
So wobbly is nice too.
Continue sewing all the way around your felt shape, but leave a small opening at the end of around 4cms.
Finishing The Lavender Pocket
Now fill your heart shape, through the gap, with dried lavender. Once you have enough lavender in your pocket, sew the final gap closed.
To finish, sew a length of ribbon to the back of the pocket, so it can be hung. And add a button to cover the end of the ribbon and for decoration.
Have fun with this project and take your time. Make these with your children or grandchildren and hopefully you will be creating a memory too that will last another lifetime.
