Woven Paper Cards Are A Children's Favourite
I remember making little cards like this when I was at primary school. We all had to make Mother's Day cards using this paper weaving method. I think my Mum still has the original card somewhere. I thought that I would like to try making some with my kids, so they can give those to their Nan.
This project only needs a few simple craft materials and is really fun, especially when you see your design coming together. Once you get the basic hang of the weaving, why not try making woven decoration from old scraps of wrapping paper. Or decorations for your holiday of choice. Gift tags and greetings cards, name tags, placemats, coasters maybe even book covers.
Weave some paper together for an interesting background to another craft project.

Making A Card Shape For Our Woven Paper Cards
1st Stage
Start by measuring out a rectangle from coloured card, measuring 16cm X 24cm. You can choose any colour that you like. Then cut it out, and draw a straight line down the centre of the rectangle. And then carefully score along that line using scissors to make a fold. This will be your card.
2nd Stage
You will now need to draw a 9cm square onto the front of your card, and then cut it out to create a window in your card.
Cutting Card For Weaving
3rd Stage
Next, cut out another piece of card, in a contrasting colour to the main card, measuring 10cm X 10cm. Then make vertical cuts through the card at 1cm down the card. Cut almost to the end, but leave a bit so that it all still holds together.
4th Stage
Now, cut several strips of card in another colour, different to the two that you have already used. Make these 1cm wide also.
Making The Woven Paper Cards
5th Stage
Weave the loose strips that you have just cut through the other piece to create a chequerboard pattern. It's easier to make the cross pieces slightly wider than the main weaving frame. We can grab the ends and slide them up. Then cut off the excess at the end. Trim if necessary and glue them down securely as you go.
6th Stage
Finally, stick the woven square to the inside of the card so that it shows through the window. Now you have a lovely woven card to send to someone.
Woven Paper Cards Are Relaxing To Make
Once you get the basic idea you won't be able to stop. I like to Keep making a few more pieces and then save them in my drawer. I keep them for a moment in the future where I might an interesting woven paper piece. Just to add that extra special something to a future project.
