Start Making Your Denim Skirt
Step One: Prepare the Denim Base
Start by cutting the legs off the denim jeans just below the back pockets. Open up the inner leg seam around the crotch area. Trim any excess fabric around the crotch to ensure the skirt lies flat. Measure the gaps left at the base of the skirt at the front and back. Cut two matching triangles from the trouser legs, allowing 1/4 inch (5mm) extra along both sides for seams.
Step Two: Fill the Front and Back Gaps
Place one triangle under the gap at the front to fill it, turning under the raw edges of the upper layer and pinning it in place. Machine stitch around the sides of the triangle and press it flat. Repeat the process with the other triangle to fill the gap at the back.

Step Three: Create the Floral Ruffles
Two lengths of floral fabric will form the ruffles. Hem one long edge of each by turning under 1/4 inch (5mm) and then 1/2 inch (12mm) and topstitch in place using a sewing machine.
Step Four: Gather the Floral Ruffles
Set your sewing machine to the longest stitch length. Machine stitch along the unhemmed long edge of each fabric length without backstitching at the seam ends. Leave excess thread at each end for gathering.

Step Five: Knot and Gather
Knot the two threads at one end together. Hold one thread at the other end and gather the fabric until it fits around the base of the denim skirt. Knot the threads at the other end to secure the gathers in place. Evenly distribute the gathers along the ruffle.
Step Six: Assemble the Ruffles
Fold each ruffle in half with wrong sides together and stitch across the short ends with a 1/4 inch (5mm) seam to form each into a circle. Press the seam open and turn them right side out. Pin the wider ruffle onto the bottom of the skirt and machine stitch it in place. Overlay the narrower ruffle on top of the lower ruffle and machine stitch. Trim any excess fabric above the stitching line.

Step Seven: Add the Gingham Ribbon Ruffle
Cut a 36-inch (90cm) length of gingham ribbon. Set the machine to its longest stitch and machine stitch along the center of the ribbon. Gather the ribbon as explained in step 5. Pin the gathered gingham ribbon onto the skirt to cover the raw edge at the top of the upper ruffle. Turn the ends of the ribbon under for a neat finish and hand stitch it in place.
Step Eight: Final Decorative Touches
Create a bow with the remaining gingham ribbon and stitch it in place. Embellish the pocket area with decorative buttons and sequins, using embroidery floss to attach them. Refer to the images as a guide for button and sequin placement.
Tip: The depth of the lower ruffle determines the final length of the skirt, so adjust it to your desired length by making it deeper if needed.
With these inventive steps, you'll transform old jeans into a whimsical denim skirt, showcasing not only your creative prowess but also your commitment to sustainable fashion. Your child will delight in wearing this unique creation that's both environmentally conscious and brimming with personality.
