Materials you need to make a unicorn pillow
- 16 x 22in. (40 x 55cm) piece of lemon polka dot fabric
- 6 x 12in. (15 x 30cm) piece of peach silk
- 6 x 6in. (15 x 15cm) piece of Bondaweb
- Embroidery hoop
- Coordinating pearl embroidery floss
- Coordinating buttons, beads, and sequins
- 14 x 6in. (35 x 15cm) each of four floral fabrics
- 20 x 24in. (50 x 60cm) piece of floral fabric
- 32in. (80cm) of lemon trimming
- Scrap of peach ribbon
- 18in. (45cm) pillow form
Cut and Create the Unicorn Appliqué
Step One
Start by cutting four strips, each measuring 16 x 3 inches (40 x 7.5 cm), from your polka dot fabric. Using the appliqué step, craft the unicorn appliqué design on the remaining polka dot fabric using peach silk.
Add intricate details to your unicorn using embroidery, beading, sequins, and buttons, referencing the photograph provided as a guide. Trim the unicorn appliqué piece down to a square measuring 8 x 8 inches (20 x 20 cm).
Prepare the Patchwork Strips
Step Two
Cut one strip measuring 10 x 2 inches (25 x 5 cm) and another measuring 12 x 3 inches (30 x 7.5 cm) from each of the four floral fabrics for the log cabin-style patchwork around the unicorn square.
Assemble the Patchwork
Step Three
Pin the four smaller floral strips in a log cabin design around the central unicorn square (as shown in the diagram). Machine stitch them in place, using a 14 inch (5 mm) seam. Repeat this process with the larger strips of floral fabric and the strips of polka dot fabric. Press all seams flat and give your pillow a polished look by neatening the edges with pinking shears.
Add the Rosette and Ribbon Tails
Step Four
Cut lengths of lemon trimming to fit around the edge of the unicorn square. Pin it in place and machine stitch down the middle of the edging. Fold the outer side of the edging in over the stitching and either press it or hand stitch it in place.
Create a rosette by cutting a circle measuring 5 inches (12.5 cm) in diameter from the peach silk fabric, following the yo-yo (Suffolk puff) instructions. For the finishing touch, cut short lengths of peach ribbon for the unicorn's tails and stitch the rosette in place at one corner of the unicorn square.
Step Five
To complete your unicorn pillow, cut two pieces of fabric, each measuring 19 x 12 inches (48 x 30 cm), for the back of the cushion. Create an envelope-style back for the cushion and insert the pillow form.
With these easy-to-follow steps, you'll craft a magical unicorn pillow that will make any little princess's dreams come true. It's a delightful addition to any bedroom, providing comfort and whimsy in equal measure. Sweet dreams await your royal highness!
