How To Make A Felt Pansy Photo Mount

Crafting a felt pansy photo mount is not only a delightful artistic endeavor but also a wonderful way to add a touch of charm to your living space. This creative project combines the warmth of felt with the beauty of pansies, resulting in a unique photo display that is sure to catch the eye.

To embark on this crafting journey, you'll need an assortment of materials, including foam board, felt in various colors, organdie ribbons, upholstery tacks, sewing supplies, acrylic paint, and more. The process begins with painting the edges of the foam board in a delightful raspberry hue. This initial step sets the stage for the rich and vibrant colors that will follow.

Next comes the assembly of the pansies, both small and large. These delicate flowers are meticulously crafted from different shades of felt, allowing for a captivating interplay of colors. The petals are layered, glued, and shaped to create a lifelike pansy appearance. Each pansy becomes a miniature masterpiece, enhanced by a flower-shaped button at its heart.

The base of the photo mount is created by sewing organdie ribbons around a square of dark orange felt. The ribbons not only provide a decorative border but also add texture and depth to the piece. Once the base is ready, the pansies are arranged and pinned onto the foam board. This step allows for the insertion of photographs or postcards behind the pansies, making it a functional and decorative piece of art.

Completing the project involves attaching stick-on hooks to the back of the foam board, allowing for easy hanging. A brass wire is used to connect the hooks, ensuring stability and balance when the photo mount is displayed on your wall.

In the end, a felt pansy photo mount is not just a craft; it's a work of art that celebrates creativity and nature's beauty. This handcrafted piece adds a personalized touch to your home decor, infusing it with color, elegance, and a touch of nostalgia as it proudly displays your cherished memories. Whether you're creating it for yourself or as a heartfelt gift, this project exemplifies the joy of crafting and the art of bringing nature's beauty indoors.

Start Making Our Felt Pansy Photo Mount

Step One

Using a fine-tipped paintbrush, apply raspberry acrylic paint to the four edges of the foam board square. Allow it to dry. Combine the narrow raspberry organdie ribbon with the wider ribbon and sew them together along the edge using a running stitch.

Enlarge the small and large pansy petals by 115%, and transfer them onto tracing paper using a fine felt-tip pen. Then, trace these motifs onto Bristol board. Cut out the petals to create four small pansies and one large pansy. Trace these shapes onto different colored felts, ensuring each pansy has five petals in three different colors.

Step Two

Sew the stitched-together ribbons around the square of orange felt, positioning them 2mm (3/32in) from the edge using a running stitch. Cut the ribbon ends diagonally and join them when you reach the last corner.

Apply glue to the foam board and place the orange felt square on top, smoothing it to prevent creases.

Step Three

Glue the petals of the five small pansies together, following the diagram as a guide. Allow them to dry.

Apply a small amount of glue under the head of one of the upholstery tacks and insert it into the center of the flower. Our felt pansy photo mount is coming along nicely.

Step Four

Glue the five large petals together to create the button pansy, similar to step 3. Once dry, position it right side up on a piece of felt in the color of your choice. Trace the outline of the pansy onto the felt with a thin felt-tip pen, and cut it out just inside the line.

Sew a flower-shaped button into the center of the pansy. Attach the remaining organdie ribbon around the underside of the flower so that it slightly protrudes.

Take the felt pansy shape you've cut out and attach it to the underside of your ribbon with a few stitches. This gives the flower volume and a lifelike appearance. To create a gentle wavy effect on the petals, add a small amount of glue on either side under the button and pinch the felt together at the center.

Glue an upholstery tack to the back of the flower.

Step Five

Pin all the pansies to the foam board and insert photographs or postcards behind them.

Attach two stick-on hooks to the back of the foam board square, positioning them 12cm (4 3/4in) from the top and about 16cm (6 1/4in) apart.

Connect the two hooks with a length of brass wire and we have finished out felt pansy photo mount.
