How To Make A Papier Mache Sunburst Bowl
Step 1
Firstly, select a bowl that you like the shape and size of. I have gone for a simple bowl shape for mine. Then cover the inner surface of the bowl in petroleum jelly to make the release a lot easier.
Tear of strips of the newspaper and dip them in water, and lay them across the surface of the bowl. This basically makes the papier mache pulp inner of your bowl.
Step 2
Keep pressing the papier mache pulp into the bowl mould until it is around 1cm in thickness. Leave this to dry thoroughly in a warm dry place.
I put mine in the airing cupboard. It could take up to five days to completely dry.

Step 3
Now that it is dry, release the dried papier mache pulp bowl from the bowl mould. Then dip strips of newspaper in PVA glue and completely cover the dried bowl. Again, leave to dry.
Step 4
Next, apply two coatings of white emulsion to the bowl. Remember to allow the first coat to dry before applying a second coat.
We are on our way to making our sunburst bowl.

Step 5
Now use the set of compasses and a pencil to find the centre of the bowl and accurately drawer the sun shape. Firstly, draw a small circle in the centre, then a larger one to contain the suns rays. I drew the rays free hand as it felt easier.
Step 6
Next for the really fun part, the decoration. Paint the rim of the bowl in gold paint to add a stunning metallic detail to the bowl. Then paint the yellow and gold areas of the sunburst, followed by the darker blue areas.
Remember to leave some space between the blue and the gold rim of the bowl, you should see a white band all the way around.

Step 7
Finally, paint a red striped border around the white strip, and allow the whole thing to dry. Once dry, seal the bowl with fixative spray, then apply some gloss varnish to protect the surface.
