Lemongrass is one of those aromas that is just so beautiful and exciting. The lemon smell evokes wonderful memories of exotic locations and amazing spas and days for of being pampered. It is often used for its refreshing qualities, but it also has excellent antiseptic and deodorising qualities.
St John's wort is often used in tincture or oil form and is very commonly used to heal damaged skin and cuts. But St John's wort also has wonderful antidepressant qualities and if often used for this specific purpose.
We need to add in a preservative to this hand softener because the cream contains water. The preservative helps with the growth of mold and bacteria. It is a good rule of thumb to keep the lemongrass hand softener in the fridge after you finish making it. We can get a week out of a fresh batch. We can half the ingredients and make smaller batches. Just be careful to use a very clean implement to remove it from the jar to avoid contamination.
Not this lemongrass hand softener is quite rich and so a little goes a long way. Try it on your own hands to see how much is absorbed and determine the quantity from that of each application.
Ingredients for Lemongrass Hand Softener
Oil Phase
- 10g shea butter
- 2 teaspoons or 10ml almond oil
- 6g emulsifying wax
- 6g cetearyl alcohol
Water Phase
- 55ml spring water
- 5ml vegetable glycerin
Cooling Phase
- 1 teaspoon or 5ml St John's wort oil
- 15 drops lemongrass essential oil
- 20 drops preservative
Equipment
- double boiler
- small glass jug
- small saucepan
- electric milk frother
- bowl of cold water
- metal spoon
- 100ml jar
Start Making The Lemongrass Hand Softener
Step One
We start with the oil phase. Add in all the ingredients in to the double boiler. Then we can heat carefully until everything is melted.

Step Two
Next we start the water phase. Heat up the spring water in a glass jar placed inside a saucepan. Then and add in the glycerin.

Now we need to make sure our oil and water phases are the correct temperatures to combine. Check the temperature of both phases, we are looking for 167-176 degrees fahrenheit or 75-80 degrees celsius.
Once they both reach the correct temperature, remove both the phases from the hob.

Step Four
Make sure you use a cloth to protect your hand from the hot saucepan and remove it from the heat.

Now we want to froth up the water phase. Place the milk frother into the water phase and make sure it is touching the bottom of the pan so we don't introduce too much air.

Now carefully take hold of the hot oil phase pan again. We are going to slowly pour a steady thin stream into the water phase as we mix with the frother. Take your time and carefully pour in the oil phase. Remember to keep the frother touching the bottom of the container.
Continue combining for approximately one minute.

Once the two phases are well combined we can start cooling off the mixture. Place the container into a bowl of cold water. Continue blending. As the mixture starts to cool it will begin to thicken.

Once the mixture has cooled off we can add in the final ingredients. Now with the metal spoon, simply stir in the St John's wort oil, the essential oils and the preservative.

Step Nine
Now, we can simply pop the mixture into a fridge for a minute or two. Then remove and stir again. Continue with this process until the hand softener starts to thicken up. Continue in and out of the fridge until the mixture is thick.
Finally We Can Put Our Lemongrass Hand Softener Into A Pot
Step Ten
Finally, carefully add the Lemongrass hand softener into a jar and label with the date you made it and the ingredients list. Keep it in the fridge to preserve it for a little longer.
