Make Cool Keyrings For Dad
Key rings are really useful. But they can also be really fun to make and personalise. The problem with keys is that they are all really small and they all look the same.
So why not make a keyring as a cool fathers day gift.
You can buy the ring and chain sections from web stores. So we can do the fun bit of decorating the keyring design.
Don't just think of keyrings for cars and a house. Maybe dad always has trouble finding the key for the shed. Make an extra large key ring so he can easily see it hanging by the back door.
What We Need To Make a Fathers Day Gift Keyring
- Thin crafting plywood from craft shops
- Balsa wood
- Pencil and scissors
- Paint
- Paint brushes
- Glue
- Keyring and chain
Start Making The Fathers Day Gift
We start by cutting small rectangles from the sheet of thin crafting plywood. This will be the base or background of our keyring. You can make your keyring any size or design you like.
We can use a sharp pair of scissors, but ask for help from an adult if needed. If scissors don't work ask an adult to help by using a junior hacksaw.
Now cut some simple shapes from the balsa wood. Two different triangle shapes and a boat shape. Balsa wood is soft so we should be able to use scissors here.
Next We Start Painting Our Fathers Day Gift
We can now paint. Start painting the pieces all over in your chosen colours. Let the pieces dry thoroughly. Some wood needs to be painted twice. If you have patches that don't look great. Simply do another coat of paint.
Make sure to paint the edges of the wood also. You can use a smaller paintbrush if that makes things easier.
Assembling Our Father Day Gift
Now we just need to glue our cool keyring together. Once the paint is all dry, you can position the pieces where you think they look best. Move them around until you get a good fit.
Once you are happy, simply glue down each piece and hold in place for a short while.
Again, let the glue dry completely.
Finishing Our Father Day Gift
Finally, to finish our Fathers Day gift we simply need to attach the ring and chain. Make a small hole in the top of the keyring. Ask an adult to help with this. You can use a bradawl if you have one. This is a tool for poking holes.
If you don't have a bradawl, just find a nail and take your time slowly try to push it through. Find an adult to help.
Then finally, attach the key ring chain through the hole. You may have to bend the ring open with pliers, pop it through the hole and then squeeze it closed. Again, ask an adult for help.
And you are finished. What a lovely Fathers Day Gift and it's extra special because you took the time to make it yourself.
What other key ring ideas can you make? Maybe one with a house on it or a shed or a garage. Or try and just paint a car or a motorbike.
Maybe write your name on the back and the year you made it. So you can both look back in years to come.
