A Decoupage Hat Box Is Something Special
Hat boxes always have a beautiful round shape. But for mine, I wanted the design to look a lot prettier and more interesting. These are brilliant to keep your hats in, or other things, or just as a handmade decorative box for your home.
You can use any papers that you like to decorate it, wrapping paper, scrapbook paper or paper from magazines, whatever you want.

Painting A Decorative Hat Box
Step 1
Start by painting the cardboard hat box with white emulsion paint to prime the surface. Then rub it down using the fine grade sandpaper. Then using the sponge, apply a wash of watered down poster paint to create an aged effect to the box. Use the rag to remove some of the paint as you go along.
Step 2
Next, cut out your desired pictures from the wrapping paper, you can use any that you are happy with. Then arrange them on the box where you would like them.

Step 3
Now glue each of your pictures down in the desired position using diluted PVA glue. Then leave it all to dry thoroughly.
It's exciting making a decoupage hat box.
Step 4
Lastly, varnish the box with a coloured varnish, again removing some of it with a rag to give the box more of a warm antiqued look.
Decorating A Hat Box Conclusion
Hat boxes always seem to be mostly good quality boxes. A hat is a premium item and so the box usually reflects. So take your time and have fun with this decoupage hat box project. And who know how long someone might keep this box. Even long after we have finished using it.
