These simple decorative papier mache frames are really fun to make. I really love doing papier mache with my children. I have introduced them to it quite recently. I hadn't done it for years, but doing a lot more, now that I have remembered how fun it is to do.

Begin by finding a template of a picture frame, draw the template onto cardboard and cut it out. Cut out the centre square also, and save that for later. This will eventually be used to stick your picture onto and to make a backing for the frame. Score along the other lines using a craft knife. Make sure that you do not cut all the way through.

Next, fold each of the flaps inwards along the scored edges that you just made, and tape the frame securely together using masking tape.

Next, attach a piece of wire to the back of the frame using masking tape. Take the wallpaper paste, and mix it up using the instructions on the packet.

Now, tear the newspaper into roughly 2.5cm wide strips and dip them into the wallpaper paste. Stick them onto the frame, making sure that both the front, back and sides are covered, to make a papier mache frame.

Once dry, prime the papier mache frame with two coatings of white emulsion paint, and leave it to dry again. Make sure that the surface of the papier mache frame is completely opaque.

Decorate the front of your frame using self hardening clay. Make heart shapes (or any other shape that you wish) and press them onto the front of the frame. Hold them firmly in place using a modelling tool to smooth down the sides of the clay.

To finish your frame, paint it using poster paints (in the colours of your choice), and then leave to dry thoroughly. Once dry, apply a coating of varnish. Now, get the middle cut out piece that you put to one side earlier. Stick your photograph or picture onto the backing and attach it to the frame using glue or masking tape.
