Pretty Fragrance Pomander Balls Make Lovely Gifts
Step 1
First, spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly over the surface of each of the rubber balls to make it a lot easier to remove the papier mache from them once dry.
Step 2
Next tear small strips of newspaper and cover them in glue paste. Coat each of the rubber balls with about six layers of the newspaper strips. Then stand each of them in an egg cup to dry thoroughly.
Making Papier Mache Spheres Is Quite Easy
Step 3
Once the papier mache is dry, use the pencil to draw a line around the middle of the ball to create two equal halves. To cut, secure each of the balls onto the cutting mat using a piece of reusable putty (blue tack).
And then carefully cut around the centre line using a craft knife. You may need to reposition the ball a number of times, mostly for safety purposes and ease. Separate the two halves of the ball and leave them to dry face up.
Step 4
Then when all of the pieces are completely dry, glue them back together with the PVA glue. Ensure that you align the edges as accurately as possible to create the sphere shape. Then cover each of the joins with two thin layers of papier mache to strengthen the joined edges. Leave them to dry completely.
Pretty Fragrance Pomanders That Look And Smell Amazing
Step 5
Now place each pomander ball onto the scrap piece of wood and carefully pierce some holes in the top using the bradawl. Then cut a thin piece of cork into quarters. Create a small hole for the cork in the bottom of the pomanders.
Step 6
Next, prime each of the balls with a coating of white emulsion paint and leave to dry thoroughly. Followed by a coat of coloured emulsion, any colours of your choice. I have used pastel colours. Make sure that you avoid blocking the holes with paint.
Then using a paper funnel, fill each of the pretty fragrance pomanders with fragrant dried lavender and seal with the cork. Finally, tie a thin piece of decorative ribbon around each of the pomanders and tie a bow. Keep it in place with PVA glue and a pearl headed pin.
