This is one of the first simple paper quills designs that I tried out with my daughter. She loved doing it so much we immediately did more. I would recommend something quite simple for young children. But you can go into as much detail as you like.

I have seen so many beautiful paper quill designs. You can even buy kits with instructions, or you can make up your own design as you go along. I really want to have a go at making something abstract, that will change as I'm making it. I love the idea of the finished quill art being a bit of a surprise. I also love that is is such an affordable craft.

Have fun and if you are new to paper quilling then start here with some simple paper quills.

Choose all of the different colour papers that you would like to work with, and cut them into thin even strips. Then curl one end of each strip with the blunt part of a pair of scissors, then starting at the curled end, roll the strip up into a tighter coil.

You can now release the coil slightly and apply glue to the end, and hold it in position until the glue is dry enough. You can pinch the outside of the coils with your fingers to create a range of different shapes.

It is now time to create your own quill art picture, so you will need to measure and cut out a rectangular piece of card to the size that you want it, and fold it in half.

Then arrange your colourful quill shapes onto the card until you are happy with your layout. Then you can glue them down to the card by applying glue to the bottom edge of the quills.

And really that is the basics of paper quilling. Obviously like all good crafting projects, there are people who have taken paper quilling to the extreme. You can make some wonderful art. But we all need to start somewhere. So start with the basics and then work your way up slowly. Everything you make along with the way, will have that amazing quilling magic.
