Creating a Stunning Patchwork Bed Runner: A Guide to Upcycling with Denim
Patchwork is a brilliant way to transform leftover fabric scraps into something beautiful and functional. In this DIY project, we'll show you how to breathe new life into old denim jeans by incorporating them into a striking patchwork bed runner. When combined with various blue fabrics, these denim squares create a captivating visual effect. Follow these steps to craft your own unique bed runner:
Materials needed to make a patchwork bed runner
- 12 x 36in. (30 x 90cm) each of denim, flannel dotted, flannel owl print, plain turquoise, and striped fabrics
- Beads and buttons
- 30 x 54in. (75 x 135cm) piece of striped backing fabric
- 30 x 54in. (75 x 135cm) piece of batting (wadding)
- 170in. (425cm) of 1in. (2.5cm)-wide denim fusible binding tape
Cut and Arrange the Fabric Squares
Step One
Begin by cutting each of the five different fabrics into 14 squares, with each square measuring 5 x 5 inches (12.5 x 12.5 cm). Lay out the squares in a pattern that forms a bed runner, 11 squares in length and six squares in depth.
Using a 1/4-inch (5 mm) seam allowance, stitch the squares in the top row together one by one, and then proceed with the following rows. Press the seams in each row to one side, alternating the direction in each subsequent row to reduce bulk at the seamlines. Stitch the rows together, ensuring that all seamlines align.
Embellish The Patchwork Bed Runner with Buttons and Beads
Step Two
Following the instructions, creatively stitch buttons and beads onto several patches of the bed runner to add decorative flair.
Prepare the Backing and Batting
Step Three
Use the runner as a template to cut a piece of striped fabric for the backing, ensuring it matches in size. Cut a piece of batting (wadding) that is slightly larger than the runner.
Quilt the Patchwork Bed Runner
Step Four
Layer the patchwork runner onto the batting with the right side facing up. Machine stitch along each seam to quilt between the pieces, securing them in place.
Step Five
Lay the backing fabric wrong side up and place the patchwork top onto it, with the batting side facing downward. Pin the layers together and then machine stitch all the way around, using a 1/4-inch (5 mm) seam allowance.
Trim the edges to ensure they are equal and straight all around, if necessary.
Step Six
Cut the denim fusible binding tape into lengths for each side of the bed runner. Open out the tape and insert the raw edges of the runner. Fold it back over and iron it in place for a clean finish.
Tip: Don't let those leftover squares go to waste! Transform them into a matching patchwork cushion using the instructions on page 28 for creating an envelope cushion back. This way, you can tie your bedroom decor together with a cohesive and stylish look.
With this DIY patchwork bed runner project, you'll not only infuse your bedroom with a touch of rustic charm but also repurpose old denim into a work of art that's both eco-friendly and visually captivating. Happy crafting!
