Question Asked:

Hi, I have recently done some work for a client of mine around his house and he was telling me he was selling these amazing chairs. We're pretty friendly, so he let me have a good look at them.

I don't know what it is, but I actually really started to like the look of them. These particular chairs are well out of my price range. And he had actually already sold them to an interior designer for a four figure sum, for each one, and there are six of them, phew!

Anyway I was wondering if I could actually try and make something similar myself. I mean if you look at them, they have a sort of black plastic bucket seat. Then the orange leather padding, this wasn't actually removable. It was stuck in with something. And then the legs where metal. The bucket chairs were actually heavier than you would imagine and really didn't flex much, so were pretty good quality.

I'm not trying to copy anyone's design to sell or anything, just for personal use. I'm not sure what the copyright on that is. I'm sure for personal use would be ok. Anyway, I wanted to actually change the shape a little and I think they would look really smart in my home.

So I am thinking, if I make a form for the base of the bucket chair, then make a grp mold around it. This wouldn't be that hard. Then once I have the mold, I can make six chair buckets in that mold and make them stiff with some cross pieces. I know grp is very strong and stiff like a plastic bath tub.

Then I just need to make the pads, I wasn't going to make mine out of leather, but rather try and find a really good quality fake leather. Like the stuff they make fake leather handbags out of. That seems to last longer than the fake leather they make office chairs out of. I've done upholstery before, so I feel confident here too. Maybe it would be cool to have lime green, instead of the orange. My car is lime green, ha!

Then I just need some gold legs. Maybe I could actually just do shiny black legs, that would look pretty sharp too and probably easier to make myself to be honest. I think it's do-able.

I think I could make some pretty sharp looking designer Denis chairs, that would be really unusual. Maybe if they are different enough I could actually sell them.

I just need to fake a swimming pool and a yacht now and I'm there, ha ha.
Good idea? What would you differently?
