I have to say the best piece of furniture I own is this wonderful four drawer chest of drawers that my mother's uncle made for her when she was young. She lived in a tiny house and didn't have much money and wanted a chest of drawers that were neat and tidy and smart looking. But also something that would last a lifetime. Her uncle was very talented and he kindly made a lot of furniture for her. There are still a number of his projects around my mother's house today.

From bookshelves to coffee tables, they all are very simply, but very well made. I remember myself, when I was a child, abusing a beautiful wooden bench he made. Me and my brother would always turn it upside down and pretend it was a boat. We must have dropped it a hundred times and it is still as solid today, when my children play on it.

I'm not sure how he made this four drawer chest of drawers. But when you look, it does look like very simple construction. And I actually don't remember him having any big tools. He made these drawers mostly with hand tools if I remember.

I'm not sure what wood it is made out of. It's a beautiful color in the real world and is just lovely to the touch. I wish all my furniture was the same color. It is quite heavy and has actually been dropped down a flight a stairs at one point. My mother has stood on it also, I'm not sure you would want to do that with any modern furniture.

It has nice big deep drawers. I prefer less deeper drawers than more shallow drawers. I remember my mother put the little handles on. She thought it added a little something. She is quite creative also, but more in an artistic way.

Now my uncle has passed and my mother is moving to a smaller house again and I have my another daughter on the way. I am the lucky recipient of this beautiful set of four drawers chest of drawers. And I have asked my own husband if he can put a little lip around the edge and make it into a changing table for the new baby.

He said he thinks he can make a thing that goes over the top, that we can take off when we are done. So we don't hurt the original chest of drawers. It's lovely to think of a simple piece of furniture that has so much love embedded into it and that my own child will soon be able to feel that.

I really think objects can absorb good emotions and I just feel happy when I am around the beautiful pieces of furniture my mother's uncle created.
