How can I upholster this old vintage chair to look more modern?

Question Asked:
I was given this lovely old chair by an elderly neighbour as they were going to throw it out. It still has loads of life left in it, and it is really comfortable to sit on. I would like to modernise it a bit to fit in with more modern interior décor. I would like to put it in the hallway so people can sit on it when they put their shoes on and take them off.
This will be my first time reupholstering something, so I am very new to this. While I do love the vintage charm and character of the chair, I would love to bring it into the 21st century, a classic piece with a contemporary touch. What upholstery equipment and materials do I need to buy? And what would be the best way to reupholster this old chair to make it look more modern?
I am also open to repainting or re-staining the wooden part of the chair. So any suggestions on the best wood paint or wood stain to use would be very much appreciated.
I cannot decide if a plain or patterned fabric would be best for the chair, opinions on this would also be most welcome. We have a fairly neutral hallway, neutrals and accents of green. And is there anything in particular that I need to know when looking for and purchasing upholstery fabric?
I would love to see any furniture and upholstery projects that anyone has done.
