What is the best paint for painting wooden furniture?

Question Asked:
I have recently started painting wooden furniture as a hobby and I'm really enjoying it. I really like upcycling vintage or maybe we'll call it retro furniture, and making it look modern and interesting. I think a lot of people really enjoy something that is not modern and mass produced.
I especially like things like; chests of drawers, cabinets, side tables and coffee tables. I have done about half a dozen pieces and managed to sell them on, but I am now thinking about how to possibly improve my processes and am starting to think first about the paint. I would really like to paint my furniture with the right paint, but cannot decide on the best paint to use.
I would like a paint type and brand that offers lots of different colours to give me more choice when making my wooden furniture. A nice selection of neutral tones would also be really good. Paint is one of those odd things, that can be reasonably priced or crazy expensive, and you don't really know what it is like until you use it. So a good recommendation for furniture paint would be appreciated. Or even if you have had a bad experience with a brand, maybe something to steer clear of.
I don't mind spending a bit more if it is really worth it. I have actually bought cheaper paint and you just end up painting something with more and more layers and cursing the fact that saving a few pounds has now equated to hours and hours of extra work.
I am also maybe thinking about spraying, if that is even possible. My husband has had his office painted recently and he said they just came in and sprayed the paint over everything, walls and woodwork. So maybe it is possible I could get into spraying the furniture. Does anyone have any experience of this? Or can recommend the right tools and paint to research?
I am also looking for furniture varnish suggestions as well, for if I decide to keep the existing wood. What do other people use for furniture painting please? And any additional furniture painting tips would also be very welcome.
Thank you in advance.

I really like using French Chic paint as it comes in so many different colours. You can get a paint chart from their website with all the colours on in case you need to see the finish of it. I find it really useful. The chart also shows the other products that they have available, such as the finishing coat.

I use French Chic paint. All of their ranges are beautiful. I also use their sugar soap and finishing coat. I had to get the paint brushes to match as well.

I like to use eggshell paints, as they give a beautiful low-shine finish. The eggshell finish will be similar to the chalk paint look, with just a touch more shine.

I have been using Rust-Oleum Chalk and satin paint for years. I Usually just buy it from Homebase. They also have a version for metal, should you ever need that. Rust-Oleum comes in different finishes including; chalk and satin, metallic, spray paint, lacquer for if you would like to keep the wood showing. And there is also a finishing wax.
