Are paint stencils really making a comeback?

Question Asked:

Is stenciling really making a comeback? I remember when I was a kid, my mum up a ladder and endlessly stenciling a border around the top of our living room wall.

She loved to watch a TV show called Changing Rooms and it did seem like everything needed to be stenciled in the 90s. It was a way of adding a level of personalisation to a room to make it feel a bit more special. She even got me involved, but the top of the living room wall was a little too high for me to do too much, thank goodness. I probably would have slipped and she'd have thought it was adorable and then we'd all have been left with a great big personalised blob halfway along the wall.

But I didn't really get it at the time and now I am reading everywhere that paint and stencils and all the little stencil brushes are actually making a comeback.

What is even weirder is that when I grew up, I ended up buying a house where the living room was stenciled across the top of the wall and worse still. The walls were painted terracotta! And if you remember the stenciling fad, painting everything terracotta, was right there with it.

So I had just spent every penny I had on this new home and it had terracotta walls with stenciled flowers around the top boarder. And I was completely broke and had to live like that for a least a few years. And I have to say, it didn't make me fall back in love with stenciling!

Even on furniture it feels a little weird to be honest. But I am starting to think, like most things crafty, it does depend on the level of skill of the person applying the stencil. I find it hard to believe that a terracotta living could ever look nice, but I am sure there is someone out there, or a house in a certain location, where it could look nice. And maybe even the flower stencils could too!

So I thought I'd give it another go, but I don't want to stencil my walls and I don't want to stencil any furniture, well maybe I could.

But does anyone have any ideas of good things to stencil? I think at least the patterns are bit more sophisticated now, than they were in the 90s. So that has to be half the battle there.

Maybe, I'll go round my mum's house and do her living room when she's not there. Would be fun to see the look on her face, just like those old episodes of changing rooms :)
