Question Asked:
Hello,
I would be eternally grateful if someone could help me source some thick chair foam in the UK? A friend of mine had these old chairs, and a double sofa thing, and offered them to me because she knows I like a project.
I wasn't sure at first, but the more I look at them, the more interesting they are getting. I remember the 70s, and everything had a certain cool aesthetic to it, I think. If you watch old movies from the 70s, all the office furniture I think always looks really cool.
Then sometimes I look at them and they look like they are from a hospital waiting room, ha ha.
I am thinking about cleaning them right up. Maybe sand down and re-varnish the woodwork. Maybe I should change the colour of the woodwork. Maybe make it black or pale it up a bit, not sure!
I wanted to put some smart, fake black leather pads on the seat and on the back too. I think this will actually look pretty smart. I don't mind doing this little bit of sewing. I've done a little bit of upholstery before and this is not that complicated, I don't need zips or anything complicated like that. But I do like the piping around the edges and actually had moderate success doing piping last time.
Made a nice little fake brown leather seat for a go kart my son made.
I am guessing also I need to weave through the metal springs, the thick upholstery webbing they use to give more support to the cushions. I think I can get some of that.
But what I really wanted was some good quality foam for inside the seat and back. I know a lot of foam is rubbish now-a-days. It feels fine when you get it, then you sit on it for 6 months and it is as flat as a pancake. This is why every office chair is uncomfortable.
So can anyone recommend somewhere to get good quality foam from, that is going to last a few years at least. I don't think these chairs will get much use, but I want them to look nice and don't mind spending a little more to get good quality foam, my backside will thank me later.
Maybe someone has some leftover I can buy.
Thanks you
Wil
