Question Asked:
When was the last time you wrote a letter?
Yes, me too, up until about 2 months ago when my daughter went off to college. I thought it would be a nice treat for us both to write each other the odd nice letter. And we have kept going since. And she actually loves it too.
I think it is because when you write a letter you spend a bit more time thinking about exactly what you want to write. And therefore the things you write are actually more special and meaningful. And she says that because she can see my handwriting (which is not the best to be honest), she feels a bit closer to me, in those moments when she feels a little home sick.
I have to say, I haven't felt so excited to receive something in the post than when I receive a letter from her. I don't really know what it is, it is so amazing how quickly we forget the simple things in life. With all the technology we have now, it is so easy to send off any meaningless message about some fluff that is happening. But writing a letter really does seem much more wonderful.
Sometimes I collect a little something from the garden to remind her of home. Or I actually printed some photos out we took, again, when was the last time you did that?
But getting a letter now seems like getting the most wonderful present from the most wonderful person and is literally the highlight of my week.
Plus I get to read them over and over and keep them for the long term.
I really like how writing a letter sort of forces you to slow down and take your time about what you want to write. How many times have you sent a text and someone has read it the wrong way? Or you were tired and didn't put enough effort into what you were trying to say.
But I actually have a little letter writing ritual now. In the morning with a nice cuppa and a biscuit, at the kitchen table, and I make it a really special moment for myself. And it's exciting to think that she really appreciates getting the letters I send too.
So if there are any other letter writers out there, it would be good to know if you know where to get any pretty letter writing stationary or a nice letter writing kit. I have one, but I feel it is a bit boring.
