Question Asked:

What can you make with pipe cleaners? Lol, really what on earth do you actually make with pipe cleaners? My daughter and I are always making little projects and have tried lots of different things. We especially like papercraft projects and are currently making a family scrapbook with lots of pictures of our family and friends.

My daughter is six and she is very responsible and wonderful at using the scissors and cleaning up after herself. I love the time we spend together, away from all the distractions. And I love how this is really developing her creativity. I can actually see her getting more and more creative over time. Almost like practising being creating is helping stimulate her brain.

I just hate the idea of her getting a phone and then seeing her just stuck to it all the time, like I have been. I haven't been the best example for her, when it comes to staring at my phone. But now we have everything in moderation. And we have our special time for sitting down and doing projects, and we both love it. Plus we get to make things for dad and granny and grandad.

But I am still mystified about pipe cleaners. I mean a pipe cleaner still is a really odd thing to me. I remember when I was a kid, they only came in white. Whoever makes them now, has tried to make them more fun by making them bright colours. But I didn't know what to do when them as a kid, and I still don't know what to do with them as a parent.

It's funny to me that they made them all colourful, but they are still called pipe cleaners. They didn't give them a fancy, fun name like fluffy wires, or wiggly bendies or something lol. That might have made it easier to think of something creative to do with them.

Even my daughter is stumped and she is usually very creative. So if anyone has had fun making something interesting with a pipe cleaner, please let us know. Maybe post a picture back. We need a bit of inspiration. We have a whole pile of pipe cleaners and really don't know what to make with them.

Thanks in advance
Kelly and Olivia

It is really fun to make crystals with pipe cleaners. Your daughter will love this as it is very addictive. You dissolve 8-10 tablespoons of borax crystals in 600ml of hot water hot water to make the crystal forming solution, pour it into a container, screw up a pipe cleaner into the desired shape and tie a piece of string around it and tie the other end to a stick or something to dangle it over the container with the pipe cleaner submerged in the solution. This makes it easier to pull it out. Make sure the pipe cleaner does not touch the bottom or the edges of the container. Then leave it for several hours. I leave it overnight usually. Then when you pull out the pipe cleaner, crystals will have formed. I sometimes paint the edges in gold as well.
